Jewellery
We aim to create a policy that is accommodating of our varied and diverse school community, enabling all students to express themselves – and have this self-expression reflected by school policy.
Students will be permitted to wear:
- 2 piercings per ear (not specific to the lobe) both of which must be studs only (no hanging embellishments).
- 1 necklace, with a thin chain or thin beads and a small pendant. This cannot hang below the chest.
- 1 bracelet.
Year 11, 12 and 13 students only may wear:
- 1 x nose piercing. This must be a small stud only
Students will not be permitted to wear:
- Rings
- Any other facial or body piercings
- Any dangling or hoop piercings
It is vital that alongside the additional jewellery privileges, students/parents and carers must be aware of the responsibility to act in full accordance with our adapted expectations and we ask for your support in this matter. Support from home in ensuring your child adheres to the policy will ensure a smooth running of the school so please do read the information below carefully and reiterate to your children the consequences that will be in place should a student not follow our guidance.
Please note:
- Students should not have new piercings done before the start of the summer holidays as most new piercings require at least 6 weeks before the earring can be removed.
Performing Arts:
Due to Health and Safety, all students will need to remove all jewellery before Dance, Drama and PE lessons. Students will be responsible for removing their own jewellery and storing it safely while the lesson is taking place. Please note that staff/ the school cannot be responsible for collecting in jewellery as it is too time consuming and results in a loss of lesson time. In addition, please note that we cannot be responsible for any lost jewellery and would therefore recommend students do not wear jewellery on days when they have PE or Dance; we would urge parents/ carers to insist on this from home.
Please also note:
If students are wearing cultural bracelets that cannot be removed, they will need to cover them with a sports wrist band in order to take part in PE and Dance lessons. Students are responsible for bringing in their own wristbands for this purpose.
If students are hoping to take part in competitions run by external organisations, they may be excluded from the event if they are unable to remove all jewellery. We have to adhere to risk assessments and Health and Safety guidelines posed by external companies and many do not allow jewellery of any sort to be worn or covered.
Hair
Hairstyles should be considered in accordance with our school uniform policy. We respect the individuality of each student and therefore allow students to wear their hair in any colour they choose. However, in line with Health and Safety, there may be occasions where students may be asked to tie their hair back or cover it (for example, Food Technology).
Hair accessories should be plain black, grey, pale blue, navy or white only. No ski or woollen headbands should be worn within the school building. In line with our wider uniform policy, a plain headscarf or hijab can be worn, fixed securely in any block colour.
At Townley Grammar, we agree with the Halo Code in acknowledging that “Afro-textured hair is an important part of our Black staff and students’ racial, ethnic, cultural and religious identities, and requires specific styling for hair health and maintenance”. In line with the Halo code, “we welcome Afro-textured hair worn in all styles including, but not limited to, afros, locs, twists, braids, cornrows, fades, hair straightened through the application of heat or chemicals, weaves, wigs, headscarves, and wraps”.

Our school’s legal duties under the Equality Act 2010
The Equality Act 2010 prohibits discrimination against an individual based on the protected characteristics, which include age, sex, disability, race, religion or belief, pregnancy and maternity, and gender reassignment.
To avoid discrimination, our school will:
- Avoid listing uniform items based on sex, to give all pupils the opportunity to wear the uniform they feel most comfortable in or that most reflects their self-identified gender.
- Make sure that our uniform costs the same for all pupils.
- Allow all pupils to have long hair (though we reserve the right to ask for this to be tied back).
- Allow all pupils to style their hair in a way that is appropriate for school and makes them feel most comfortable.
- Allow pupils to wear headscarves and/or other religious garments.
- Allow pupils with sensory or physical needs to make reasonable adaptations to their uniform depending on their specific needs.
- Allow for reasonable adaptations to our policy on the grounds of equality by asking pupils or their parents/carers to get in touch with their child’s Learning Manager, who can answer questions about the policy and respond to any requests. These will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Limiting the cost of school uniform
Our school has a duty to make sure that the uniform we require is affordable, in line with statutory guidance from the Department for Education (DfE) on the cost of school uniform.
We understand that items with distinctive characteristics (such as branded items, or items that need to have a school logo or a unique fabric/colour/design) cannot be purchased from a wide range of retailers and that requiring many such items limits parents/carers’ ability to ‘shop around’ for a low price.
We will make sure our uniform:
- Is available at a reasonable cost.
- Provides the best value for money for parents/carers.
We will do this by:
- Carefully considering whether any items with distinctive characteristics are necessary.
- Limiting any items with distinctive characteristics where possible for example, by only asking that the blazer, worn over the jumper, features the school logo.
- Limiting items with distinctive characteristics to low-cost and/or long-lasting items.
- Considering cheaper alternatives to school-branded items.
- Avoiding specific requirements for items pupils could wear on non-school days, such as coats, bags and shoes.
- Keeping the number of optional branded items to a minimum, so that the school’s uniform can act as a social leveller.
- Avoiding different uniform requirements for extra-curricular activities.
- Considering alternative methods for signalling differences in groups for inter-school competitions, such as creating posters or labels.
- Making sure that arrangements are in place for parents/carers to acquire second-hand uniform items.
- Avoiding frequent changes to uniform specifications and minimising the financial impact on parents/carers of any change
- Consulting with parents/carers and pupils on any proposed significant changes to the uniform policy and carefully considering any complaints about the policy.
