The Academy of Real Assets Creative Competition – Winners and Launch Party
Last term, Year 10 Urban Classroom students took part in The Academy of Real Assets annual creative writing competition with the prompt:
"If I Could Build My Neighbourhood from Scratch..."
This event is designed to inspire students across the UK to think creatively about real estate, real assets, and the future of their communities.
This year, we have the pleasure to announce that two of our students' pieces of writing have been chosen to be included in one of their publications. The winners are Lola (10 Demeter), Hannah (10 Hera), Micahiah (10 Athene) and Prashansa (10 Demeter).
The student’s submissions will be published in a physical book, showcased online, and exhibited at The Academy of Real Assets’s London launch event on 15 July 2025. At the event, entrants will have the opportunity to celebrate with family, friends, and teachers while connecting with professionals from leading real estate and real assets firms for career insights and work experience opportunities”

If I could build my neighbourhood from scratch
If I could build my neighbourhood from scratch, I would most importantly ensure that no litter is left on the ground by adding more bins around, which are designed in fun ways (as a sort of fun activity for people to spot them and locate each colourful bin in the area on walks for example). I imagine the bins to have a convenient ‘open top’ design, so people have an easier way of throwing away their rubbish. This would encourage more people to protect the scenery from being contaminated with litter!
I would also include much more greenery, with trees standing in rows along the pavement and bushes/flowers in people’s front gardens. This to me would create a more comforting environment, especially as it gives a home to wildlife such as birds and squirrels. Roads should be less populated, and taking the understanding that neighbours would need to park cars, there could be a designated space location near each set of houses to ensure that people still are able to park fairly close, but without the clutter of cars aligning on the streets.
Essential amenities would be designated nearby to the neighbourhood, allowing dwellers to easily have access to necessary items. I would also create a grassy space in an area to allow dogs and children (and their adults too) to play without making a journey to a ‘far-away’ park. I believe that neighbourhoods should contain useful technology without making the area look too modernised and ‘robotic’. What I try to convey regarding this is a very rural-designed area without too many metal objects obstructing the beautiful nature that has always been intended to exist in places where humans dwell.
There will be more environment-blending objects, like lampposts disguised as trees. I also wish it would be near the coast, having a blue ocean crashing waves upon the shore, and a short bicycle ride on a sunny day from my home. Neighbours would be friendly and would have a close sense of community, as the neighbourhood wouldn't be massively big. There would be less polluting vehicles around, with more people opting for things like bicycles, which not only would reduce noise but also toxic emissions, creating a start for a better place. The houses will be built with many windows, a way to explore the outside views from inside, a relaxing abode to chill in.

If I could build my neighbourhood from scratch
What if a neighbourhood could be more than just a group of homes and streets? What if it could change and adapt to the needs of its residents like a living thing? Picture entering a place where the air is alive with possibilities, where the aroma of freshly baked bread and blooming gardens blend, and where every corner reveals a story. My ideal neighbourhood is more than just a location; it's an experience, a symphony of creativity and community spirit. Tucked away in a valley where golden sunlight filters through tall trees, this neighbourhood would be a haven that combines the conveniences of modern life with the natural beauty of the surroundings.
Whispering willow trees that span over mosaic-paved walkways greet you as you enter. Under your feet, an interactive dance of illumination is created as the streets, driven by kinetic tiles, softly light up with every step. The residences, which are the ideal combination of wood, glass, and living walls, change with the seasons. In the summer, the balconies expand, and in the winter, they retract to provide insulation. Vines and edible herbs abound in rooftop gardens, beckoning onlookers to pick a handful of fresh strawberries or mint. There are floating platforms where visitors may relax above peaceful waters, secret alcoves where poets recite lines in quiet tones, and bioluminescent gardens that sparkle at night, making these parks unlike any other. This place even has different air, with a crisp, oxygen-rich freshness that comes from the vertical forests, which filter pollution and keep the balance of nature perfect.
Dreamers and doers make up the population of this paradise: storytellers who congregate beneath old trees to weave tales into the night, innovators creating futuristic transport pods, and artists creating paintings that depict the history of the land. Here, nobody is a stranger. The neighbourhood's layout, which includes lively marketplaces where farmers exchange sun-ripened fruits for handcrafted jewelry, circular plazas where music and laughter reverberate, and co-living spaces where skills are freely shared, all promote connection. Every week, people from all walks of life gather for communal dinners, where they exchange tales, ideas, and goals as a thousand colorful lanterns shine in the nighttime sky. Homes now feature communal gardens instead of private backyards, where neighbours work together to cultivate food and build strong bonds with one another.
Here, education is not limited to boring classrooms; it flourishes in interactive holographic libraries, outdoor amphitheaters, and mentorship programs where knowledge is passed down like family heirlooms. Children learn by touching, constructing, and exploring in these treehouse-like schools set among old oaks. Instead of being sterile white boxes, hospitals are healing havens with aromatherapy gardens, tumbling waterfalls, and AI-assisted care that guarantees each patient receives individualized care. Markets are carefully designed sanctuaries : bookstores where the pages turn themselves, bakeries where the aroma of honey and cinnamon fills your nose like a cozy hug, and tech centers where local innovators present the newest innovations in eco-friendly living. The neighbourhood thrives on smooth transit rather than a labyrinth of asphalt and traffic: magnetic levitation trams glide soundlessly, bicycles are the preferred mode of travel, and solar-powered carriages add a nostalgic charm to modern mobility.
The days flow together like a masterfully composed tune, with each note flowing into the next. The distant ringing of wind harps, their gentle melodies drifting through open windows, greets mornings. Morning commuters congregate at solar-powered charging benches, street performers entertain, and cafés serve coffee made with beans gathered from the neighbourhood's own vertical farms. With artists creating murals on street corners, academics testing biodegradable textiles in open workshops, and kids laughing as they make their way through mind-challenging labyrinth gardens, the neighbourhood changes as the sun rises higher. During the golden hour, holographic storytellers show ancient narratives on building walls, turning the streets into a theater of light. Evenings are sacred, a time when the entire neighbourhood slows down—rooftop observatories open for stargazing, hidden lantern-lit paths beckon night wanderers, and silent floating rafts drift across mirror-like ponds, offering a place for reflection and quietude.
This neighbourhood, in my opinion, embodies a world in which people live not just in a physical location but in a living, breathing piece of art, where human potential is boundless. It is a place where people value isolation just as much as they value connection, where creativity and nostalgia coexist, and where there is always hope for something new and wonderful. This isn't simply a perfect community; it's a manifestation of who I am, with my core beliefs shown in the streets I traverse, the discussions I have, and the silence and laughter that coexist. Time passes in this neighbourhood at just the right pace—slow enough to enjoy, yet fast enough to inspire.
A neighbourhood is more than its actual buildings; it is the collective pulse of its residents and the unspoken aspirations woven into its very fabric. According to this view, my ideal neighbourhood is a place to become rather than merely a place to dwell. A society created to uplift the human soul and give each moment purpose, in addition to providing for basic necessities. Here, life is enjoyed rather than just lived, encircled by creativity, nature, and the warmth of human connection.

If I could build my neighbourhood from scratch
My ideal neighbourhood would be one where everyone would feel safe, supported, and engaged. It is a space where everyone can thrive, while having both inclusivity and sustainability.
First and foremost, an ideal neighborhood would be set somewhere in the south of Kent, with many trees and green spaces. There would be different types of parks like children’s parks and public gardens. There would also be small lakes with small fish that won’t be allowed to be taken out of the pond because they have GPS tags. There would be many community spaces that bring people together. There would be libraries, leisure centres and other miscellaneous community buildings. My neighborhood would offer free public transport for all its residents, ensuring that everyone can access essential services, education, and work without a strain on the finances. It would be eco-friendly transportation that would reduce reliance on cars, and decrease traffic congestion, helping reduce the emissions. However, electric cars are also available to rent for a pricier rate at a local hub.
In my neighbourhood, clean public facilities would be a top priority. Public toilets , would always be well maintained and available in strategic locations, so that residents and visitors can comfortably enjoy the space without any inconvenience. There would be free entertainment options available for children and families, including child friendly events, outdoor activities, and even free childcare in community centers. The services would support working parents and provide a safe and enriching environment for young people.
There would be a mix of food places, offering a variety of international cuisines. The entertainment would be diverse, ranging from cinemas to bowling alleys and bars. There would be accessible homes for those who are homeless or at risk of becoming so. Support services, like temporary housing and assistance programs, which would be readily available to help them transition into stable living conditions.
There would be local markets selling fresh produce, artisanal goods, and homegrown products would encourage sustainable living and provide an opportunity for small businesses to thrive. This also reduces the neighbourhood’s carbon footprint.Security would be a top priority in my neighborhood, ensuring that all my residents feel safe and comfortable in their homes and public spaces. There would be community police, neighborhood watch programs, and a proactive approach to safety.
I would also introduce composting programs, and provide convenient compost bins in public spaces and offer education on sustainable practices so that everyone is aware of their responsibility for the environment. There would also be a very big recycling and waste centre for the effective disposal of waste.

If I could build my neighbourhood from scratch
If I had the opportunity to build my neighbourhood from scratch I would want to create an environment of peace, diversity and sustainability. My neighbourhood would be a balanced mix of urbanised streets and houses with natural beauty surrounding. The streets would be pedestrian friendly with tree lined streets and eco friendly architecture. I would want there to be a mix of residential and commercial areas as well as many green spaces, it would be filled with shops such as parks, schools, shops, healthcare facilities and local businesses.
My dream neighborhood's physical layout would combine modern architecture with the beauty of the surroundings. The streets would be spacious, clean, and bordered by tall trees that offer fresh air and shade. The large sidewalks would encourage cycling and walking as the main forms of transit. Eco-friendly features including solar panels, green roofs, and energy-efficient materials would be included into the homes and apartment complexes. In order to keep an aesthetic that allows plenty of sunlight and open space, buildings would not be too tall. There would be community gardens distributed around, giving locals the opportunity to grow their own food and get in touch with the natural world.A spacious park with playgrounds, calm water capacities, and jogging paths would be the center of the community. This park would be a meeting area where people could socialize, work out, and unwind. The streets would be lined with cafes with outdoor seating that smelled of freshly baked food and brewed coffee.
There should be a wide range of ages, cultures, and backgrounds living in my dream neighborhood. It would be a location where neighbors care deeply about one another, creating a friendly and supportive environment. An important factor in bringing people together would be community events. Fresh vegetables and handcrafted produce would be available at weekly farmers' markets, and many customs and cultures would be celebrated during ongoing festivals. Local talent would be encouraged to shine through music and art projects, which would frequent exhibitions and street performances. The purpose of public areas would be to encourage social interaction. The neighborhood would be filled with benches and seating spots to encourage random interactions. While senior citizens could take leisurely walks in beautiful parks, families would gather at playgrounds. Strong feelings of belonging would result in a community where residents feel not merely accepted but also completely at home.
Access to essential services and facilities that make daily living easy and enjoyable is the foundation of a vibrant neighborhood. Excellent schools with modern spaces, small class numbers, and engaging extracurricular activities would be found in my ideal community. With a fully equipped clinic, a pharmacy, and 24/7 emergency medical services, healthcare would be easily accessible. With reliable and clean buses, bike-sharing systems and electric transportation linking every area of the community, public transport would be effective.A busy town square with small shops, supermarkets, bookshops, and restaurants serving a variety of cuisines would act as a commercial center. Both professionals and students would have access to study areas, workshops, and lectures at the public library that serves as a community center. There would be lots of recycling facilities, solar-powered lighting, and rules that promote eco-friendly living, sustainability would be a top concern. The general quality of life would be improved and pollution would be decreased with a heavy focus on walkability and environmentally friendly transportation options.
Living in my dream community would be enjoyable and balanced. Children walking to school, cyclists, and joggers would fill the streets in the morning. Early risers would meet in cafes for coffee and chat, and the air would be filled with the aroma of freshly made bread from nearby bakeries.Residents would enjoy parks, market shopping, or working remotely from co-working facilities during the vibrant yet relaxed afternoons. A happy atmosphere would be produced by playground laughing and the soothing strumming of a street performer. The area would be immersed in a golden glow in the evenings as lovely paths were lit by lamps. Friends would get together at neighborhood gatherings, families would eat in small restaurants, and some would take in peaceful moments by the sea. The area would continue to provide lively social opportunities while preserving a calm, tranquil setting.
