Townley Physical Education Teaching & Learning Curriculum Physical Education

PE Learning JourneyPhysical Education

Townley Grammar students are offered a broad varied Physical Education curriculum. Our emphasis is on encouraging and inspiring lifelong participation, as well as promoting an active and healthy lifestyle. In addition to giving our students the opportunity to experience a multitude of activities in lesson time, we also offer an extensive extra-curricular sports programme. This enables students to not only represent the school, district, county and beyond; It also gives students the opportunity to develop and sustain friendships in a fun, engaging and nurturing environment

In addition to promoting active participation, Townley Grammar students are also encouraged to develop leadership skills through our Sports Leadership programme. As part of this programme our students are given the opportunity to plan, organise and deliver a plethora of sporting experiences to young members of our wider community, for example, primary sports festivals and sports days.

Students wishing to study sport and Physical Education in more depth can choose GCSE Physical Education in Years 10 and 11. This course covers a range of theoretical topics from anatomy to social and cultural issues in sport, as well as an assessment in both individual and team sports. Key Stage 4 Physical Education (GCSE)

The GCSE Physical Education course has been designed to allow you to study Physical Education in an academic setting, which will equip you with the knowledge, understanding, skills and values you will need to develop and maintain your own performance in various physical activities. The course will help you to gain a greater understanding of both the physiological and psychological aspects of sports as well as widening your knowledge around participation.

In GCSE Physical Education lessons you will cover both practical and theoretical components. The written examinations are worth 60% of the final grade. You will sit 2 externally set examinations incorporating multiple choice, short answer and extended answer questions. These will be based on the theory content delivered throughout the course.

Paper 1:

  • Applied anatomy and physiology
  • Movement analysis
  • Physical training
  • Use of data

Paper 2:

  • Sports psychology
  • Socio-cultural influences
  • Health, fitness and well-being

The practical component of the GCSE PE course is worth 30% of your final grade.  There are three practical assessments, at least one activity must be a team sport and one must be an individual sport. Please refer to the AQA specification for the approved list of sports or alternatively speak to one of your PE teachers.

The final part of the course is written coursework which is worth 10%.  It’s a performance analysis assessment of your strengths and weaknesses in your main sport.  You will then produce an overall action plan that suggests ways to improve upon the weaknesses that you have identified in your own performance.

Student Testimonies

“Doing GCSE PE at Townley has been the highlight of my secondary school experience. I have been competing in netball on the school team for a year and I have been playing for Bexley Hornets Club for a couple months. Townley PE has allowed me to not only play a variety of other sports including athletics, badminton, rowing, and rounders but also participate in many competitions, resulting in plenty wins and numerous chances to meet new people. As a GCSE PE student, I’ve also been given opportunities to help with different sporting activities such as umpiring netball matches and helping a primary school (Lessness Heath) with their sports day. During PE lessons and competitions my teammates/classmates and I are able to have fun, laugh, and chill, amongst ourselves but also with our teachers which is why I love PE at Townley so much and I’m very happy I chose it as one of my subjects for GCSE.” Ademide
