Townley offers its students plenty of opportunities to develop leadership skills and is proud to be one of a few schools in the country to offer students a dedicated and progressive leadership programme at secondary level.

Students start their training with a series of practical workshops created and led by top industry professional Ben Walden. Ben is an actor and Founder and Artistic Director of the education organisation Contender Charlie and his sessions cover different aspects of leadership such as Calling and Leadership, Communication Skills, Influencing Skills, Confident Communication, Styles of Leadership and Public Speaking Training.

Running alongside these workshops, students devise and lead their own leadership project within the school. This is an important part of the programme as it allows participants to exercise the action of leadership and apply what they are learning in the workshops to a real life practical situation. Project work also gives students the opportunity to gain valuable leadership experience in a safe environment, fully supported by school staff.

Projects produced by students so far include the introduction of Townley’s first ever Robotics Club, a Primary School Guided Reading Project (run at Upton Primary School), Year 11 Mentoring Project, Townley Medical Society, Zumba Fitness Club, Graphics Club and an International Dessert Society.

In addition to the workshops and project work, students attend regular in-house leadership sessions led by the Head Teacher and other specialist staff members. These bespoke sessions complement and consolidate what the students are learning about leadership, offer on-going support and advice and allow students to play an active role in steering the programme to the next level.

As students reach the final stage of their training, they work together as a team to devise and present a celebratory showcase at an external, high profile venue. In 2014, the ‘Townley Leaders Gala Showcase’ was held at the prestigious RSA in London in front of an invited audience of school staff, students, VIP’s, educational professionals, family and  friends. The student leaders captivated their audience with a presentation that chronicled their journey through the programme and gave a greater insight into the leadership skills and qualities each had developed.

The autumn term has seen a new cohort of Year 12 students join the programme and we look forward to hearing about their progress over the coming months.
